TRAVEL HOME
Sorry, we have to charge you for visiting...... If you look at all the taxes and supplements we pay on our air fares you'll know that when travelling to many countries but the USA in particular you actually pay to enter. There are airport fees, security fees and lots more. These are always in addition to the basic airfare. In some cases doubling the cheaper fare. So understand the shock when Canada realised that they may actually join everyone else in paying to enter the US. This extra fee will of course apply to them driving, taking the train or bus as well. It will also apply to those coming up from Mexico into the US. However no mention if those that do the day-trip excursion will be charged for re-entry into the US. Everyone else shouldn't worry as you probably already pay the fee anyway. As it has always been cheaper in recent years for Canadians to fly from US cities to destinations either in the continental US or further afield this charge has hit them rather badly but most have said they won't change their minds about crossing the border because it saves them hundreds! Delays, Delays, and more delays ..... Yes it is the winter season and all around there are delays due to extreme weather in the western hemisphere. It is frustrating especially around holiday time and with the advanced security arrangements cutting back what you can have in your carry-on there will be limits to what you have with you. Might be more money for the concessions at the airport but they are also running out of supplies to keep up with demand. If you are a frequent flyer then look and see if there are additions to your ticket such as lounge access that you can pay for. Some airlines offer this at about $25 to $40 per day pr flight. It is certainly worth it in winter if there are likely to be delays. It is a much more peaceful environment and refreshments are usually included as are magazines, newspapers, comfy chairs and internet access in many. This is one extra that can really make the difference at this time of year. Some airlines may allow you to pay at airport but don't count on it - check online before you go. TSA say No to changes The TSA in the US have told passengers there will be no revisions to the security screenings at airports. The response comes from a plea to change the body "shake-downs" and invasive body scanners. Most UK airports have amended screenings after the recent threats but still use manual body scanners to detect objects. Only a rare few get a "tap-down" body search. Of course it is mandatory to take off shoes and this is unlikely to change because of the potential threat and past threat in this area. Basically be prepared for long delays at airports so get there early. Screenings in the busy holiday season are going to much longer than normal. Also remember to pack presents as carrying them in your hand luggage may make you over the limit but worse they will be subject to opening and confiscation if deemed inappropriate for carriage within the cabin. It is best to pack all presents unwrapped.
